GHANA CHAPTER
What is ACSIS
The Africa Civil Society on the Internet Society (ACSIS) is an organization that is dedicated to seeing to the information needs of our society today. ACSIS exist to ensure that it lends a helping hand to other organizations and individuals ably employ processed data for development.
It was started after the the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) which was a UN General Assembly Resolution 56/183 (21 December 2001), that endorsed the holding of a two phased summit. The first phase took place in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2003 and the second phase took place in Tunis, from 16 to 18 November 2005.
Before this in 2000, during the Bamako meeting titled “The Gateway to Development” African civil society started its mobilization process to be ready for the WSIS process. This explains why, in May 2002, again in Bamako, during the first regional meeting dedicated to WSIS, African civil society was present in large numbers.
ACSIS is thus part of the umbrella body WSIS. One of its chief aims was to bridge the global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by spreading access to the Internet in the developing world.
